Tertulis di Dalam Tulang

Assalamualaikum

How are you all doing today? All vital signs are normal? Respiratory rate ok? No attacks of tachycardia? Sudden attacks of mood swing? Hungry all the times? Well, any of this symptoms still shouldn’t manifest right now, because final exam is in another one month and two weeks, which is the rightful time for all these pathognomonic signs of a medical student in distress should appear. Should any of you experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned before, afraid not, because that proves that you are already thinking (and maybe even having one or two nightmares about it) about the coming final exam. Congratulations, you are an early planner!! =)

Oh, the introduction is a bit off, isn’t it? Heheh. Actually, I have no idea on what to write about ever since the moment it has been decided that each members of Batch Committee should write an entry for each week to be published in this lovely blog of ours. But then, when it comes to my turn, we are currently studying Forensic and Toxicology. So I’m thinking, hey,why don’t I share with all of you about a very nice(in my opinion) novel regarding this subject we are now studying. So, here I go.

The novel is called Written in Bone, a work of Simon Beckett. There are two books in this series actually. The first one entitled The Chemistry of Death but I prefer the second book more. Why? I’ll tell you later. The main character in this novel will be Dr. David Hunter, a forensic anthropologist. What is forensic anthropologist?

According to wikipedia:
Forensic anthropology is the application of the science of physical anthropology and human osteology (the study of the human skeleton) in a legal setting, most often in criminal cases where the victim's remains are in the advanced stages of decomposition. A forensic anthropologist can also assist in the identification of deceased individuals whose remains are decomposed, burned, mutilated or otherwise unrecognizable.

The novel begins with a pretty nice introduction. Let me share it here with you. Ehemm2.

“Given the right temperature, everything burns. Wood. Clothing. People.”

Interesting right? No? Okay, let me proceed. For this second novel, Dr. David Hunter was assigned to investigate a case in the remote Hebridean island of Runa. A local called in reporting finding a corpse in an abandon hut, insisting for further investigation as the body was in a suspicious state. Suspecting the body belongs to nothing more than just a drunk or homeless people who finally met their final fate, Dr. Hunter flew in to Runa, to take a good look at the body before deciding whether it’s needed or not to fly a group of crime scene investigators into Runa for thorough investigation.

On reaching Runa, Dr. Hunter was brought to the crime scene. Here are some excerpts describing the state of the body.

“An untidy pile of greasy ash and cinders lay on the floor. The fire had consumed the bone as readily as it had skin and tissue. Only the larger bones remained, emerging from the ash like dead branches from snowdrift. Even this had been calcined, the carbon burned from them until they were grey and brittle. Presiding over them all like a broken eggshell was a skull, lying with its jawbone canted off to one side. And yet, apart from the body, nothing else in the room has been damaged. The fire that had all but incinerated a human being, reduced its bones to the consistency of pumice, had somehow done so without burning anything else nearby.”

“But that wasn’t the worst of it. What had shocked me to silence was the sight of two unburned feet and a single hand protruding from the ashes. The bones jutting from them were scorched to black sticks, yet they were completely unmarked’”

Got your interest piqued yet? That was only the beginning. More bodies appeared after that. Then an Atlantic storm descended, severing all power and contact with the mainland. So, as the story unfolds, more suspicious evidences showed up. Incident after incident happened forcing Dr Hunter to solve the case with very limited resources while competing against the killer. Trapped inside Runa and no way of communication whatsoever to reach the mainland to ask for help, it’s just a matter of time before the killer would strike again and take Dr. Hunter out of the quest.

Why I like this second novel more than the first one? Because the storyline is very complicated. When I was first finished reading this novel, I never thought it will end like that. Every chapter is explained brilliantly that it makes putting down the book is impossible unless you are done reading it. I’m sorry if my may of writing makes the book sounds dull, but believe me, this novel indeed is amazing. Heheh. A lot of interesting forensics facts can be found in this book, though not as much as our very own Forensic and Toxicology textbooks provide us.

Moral of the story, read textbook like your life depends on it. Just joking.=) So, if you already finish revising textbook and need escapism for a while from hard, cold facts, I think this book will be a nice getaway material.

That concludes my entry for this and only time. All the best for the coming and final year exam. And thank you for reading my scribbles.

Mim Aliff Lam Sin, ubatnya?

FORENSIC is interesting I guest…enjoy this video by the way of studying fingerprints.

Subhanallah. Medic is the complete package of life. From embryology we learned till death. DEATH is dedicated to forensic. Thank you MEDIC. Remembrance of death is a must for us.

How about medical malpractice?
Do we?

Can we?

Doctor’s life is like others too…

How about this?

So now, could you please take a minute to think all about.. Lastly All the best for becoming final exam!

SEKADAR PERINGATAN RINGKAS UNTUK DIRI SENDIRI DAN KAWAN-KAWAN..

MALAS…TIADA SEMANGAT….

Kita ni malas buat apa? malas beribadat? malas mandi? malas makan? malas study?

3. Yakinlah dengan bantuan Allah, where there is a will, there is a way..

4. Elakkan rehat yang terlalu lama, kerana alah bias, tegal biasa.

MEDIC is one way of our ibadah.

casio mmg terkenal dgn jam digital dgn fungsi pelbagai spt remote TV, kalkulator, game, databank, edifice pathfinder, waveceptor, dan pelbagai lg...
tapi tahukah anda casio telah membuat jam tangan yang berfungsi sbg Blood Pressure monitor watch. jam ni kire bleh detek tekanan darah kita.
judge by teknologi terkini mmg la biase, tp Jam ni dibuat TAHUN 1992-93. kire gempak la taun 90an pn dah bleh buat jam camni dan s ampai skrg still functioning dan bat3 masih lg bertahan.

nk tau lg bace sini
jam ni gune konsep PWTT (pulse wave transit time)

ni plak gambar2 simpanan

soalan true(a)/false(b) tp budak ni jawab C.. LOL

some jokes..

Doctor! I have a serious problem, I can never remember what i just said.
When did you first notice this problem?
What problem?

"Doctor, are you sure I'm suffering from pneumonia? I've heard once about a doctor treating someone with pneumonia and finally he died of typhus."
"Don't worry, it won't happen to you. If I treat someone with pneumonia he will die of pneumonia only."

Doctor save my life!! He didnt come...

Doctor: A person who kills your ills by pills, and kills you with his bills

Patient: Doctor I heard 10 percent of the total patients undergoing this surgery die.
Doctor: Don’t worry man, those 10 percent patients operated by me are already dead. Now it’s the turn of the 90 percent survivors.

Jet Lag

Jet lag is a collection of symptoms that occur while your body clock adjusts to a new time zone when you travel. Until you get used to the local time, you may feel disoriented and tired during the day and have difficulty sleeping in new night-time. You may also experience poor concentration, loss of appetite and diarrhea or constipation.

Most people begin to feel the effects of jet lag only after crossing three or more time zones. Travelling from west to east (e.g. from Cairo to Kuala Lumpur) shortens the day and therefore burdens the body, compare to travelling from east to west, which extends the day and easier for body.

What you can do yourself

Use these tips to reduce jet lag effects and adjust quickly to the new time zone:

  • If possible, fly during the day. You are less likely to feel jet lag if you arrive at your destination in the evening and stay awake until the bedtime.
  • Get plenty of rest before you depart: at least 8 hours’ sleep at night in the week before you travel.
  • Start adjusting to the destination time zone when you begin your journey. Set your watch to your destination time as soon as you board the plane. If it is the time for you to sleep on the flight, listen to soft music, use earplugs, wear eyeshades, and use a neck pillow. If it is the time for you to stay awake, keep active; get up and walk around the plane every hour, talk to your neighbor, read, or watch the in-flight entertainment.

Enjoy your in-flight entertainment to keep yourself awake. Have a pleasant journey!

  • Drink plenty of water or fruit juice before and du ri ng the flight to prevent dehydration, and avoid alcohol (haraam), coffee, or cola drinks. Eat light meal and avoid fatty or salty foods.
  • As soon as you arrive at your destination, adopt the local eating, waking, and sleeping times. Take a walk in daylight to help your body clock adjust.
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks within 3 hours of bedtime as they will make sleep more difficult.
  • Jet lag can affect judgement and concentration, so do not drive until you adapted to local time.
  • If you are spending less than 2 days in a new time zone, you may be better off getting up, eating, and sleeping according to your home time.
  • If you travel frequently, try using sedative antihistamine tablets to relieve temporary sleep disturbance. These medications are not addictive. Ask your pharmacist for advice on a suitable type. Alternatively, ask your doctor for a short-acting prescription sleeping pill.

Seek medical advice

Arrange to see your doctor if you are still experiencing symptoms of jet lag 2 weeks after travelling.

[scary movie] A Boy Without Teeth

Salamullahi alaikum w.b.t

My 1st intention is to mislead the issue which overwhelming us before.
2nd I want to us to seek for things which are really concern us as a medical doctor.

It's kind of copy paste. I promise just once for today

Salam

For those who are unfamiliar with medical terms, there are medical term in this post which I'll simply explain just for the benefit of understanding. The story will not be understood without knowing the terms.

First the physical therapy, it is a therapy of muscles and joints done by the physical therapist to restore weak, or atrofied muscles to their healthy state by using massaging, heat and by electical stimuli methods.

The second term is Myositis ossificans, is a pathological calcification of healty muscle and hardened it limiting muscle or joint movement. Also in worse case scenario the muscle affected  will become bone-like.

Fuhh, many to explain right? i'll continue with the story...,the title is..,

Boy without teeth!

A worried mother and his son came to Dr Ali el-deeb clinic, a specialist in rheumatology and an assistant professor at the Tanta University Hospital (TUH).

The boy is wearing a splint on his right elbow, he recently suffers from a trauma that cause  a fracture on his upper one third radial bone.

The fracture is Alhamdulillah cured, but the mother's complaint is that her son can not move his right arm, due to stiffness on his elbow joint.

It's normal for any joint to has this kind of affect after being cast by plaster of paris (pop), due to the stagnant synovial fluid and bla..bla..bla..(no time to explain..maybe another time)

After assessment Dr Ali noticed that all of the boy's front teeth were missing. So he ask the mother is it due to the accident.Shockingly the loss of teeth had nothing to do with the accident.

Want to know???

It's horrifying, even to Dr Ali! the child was undergoes a physical therapy for his stiff joint, and the most important therapy is the joint stretching which is flexion and extension of the affected elbow joint.

The therapists was doing it without doing a routine x-ray, a simple investigation. They stretch the joint without knowing that the boy has myositis ossificans of brachialis muscle!!.

His muscle had completely turn into bone, can you imagine when someone try to break your bone!.Scream! that is the word, but in this case the boy kept on screaming but the therapists said it is normal (they don't know about the calcified muscle).

The boy kept on screaming and bite his teeth together to ease the pain, sadly they kept on stretching his arm till the calcified muscle broke!.The boy can not stand the pain any longer and bite his front teeth. All the teeth broke due to the straining and the agonizing pain.

There is blood all over his face and after seeing that they stop the stretch.

The mother and the therapist were confused, they do not know what had happened.

Thus the mother became angry and they leaved the therapist out of the blue.A day after,  she visited Dr Ali's clinic and Dr Ali explains the condition of the poor child after confirming it with a simple elbow joint x-ray.

His calcified brachialis muscle was broken, so the choice of treatment is surgery and his arm will not able to move like before due to iatrogenic or his previous doctor silly, stupid yet fatal mistake.Don't forget that his front teeth are all gone too!.

scary~~~~~~..., doesn't it??

this story makes me want to study! i hope it goes for you guys too~ XD

-finish-
