Tricky Plurals

This Crazy Language

English is the most widely used language in the history of our
planet. One in every 7 humans can speak it. More than half of the
world's books and 3 quarters of international mail is in English.

Of all the languages,it has the largest vocabulary - perhaps as many as
2 MILLION words. Nonetheless, let's face it - English is a crazy
language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither
apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in
England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while
sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we
find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a
guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.


And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers
don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth,
why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one
moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make am ends but not one amend,
that you comb thru annals of history but not a single annal? If you
have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,
what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preacher praught? If a vegetarian
eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? If you wrote a
letter, perhaps you bote your tongue?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an
asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at
a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?
Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man
and wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be
opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the
weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another?

Have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when they
are absent? Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful
gown? Met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever
run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable?

And where are all those people who ARE spring chickens or who would
ACTUALLY hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your
house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by
filling it out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the
creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn't a race at all).

That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but
when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up
my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

KAHWIN : Be The Change You Wish To See...

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0.

I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child
processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and
now monitors all other system activity.

Applications such as Poker Night 10.3, Football 5.0, Hunting and Fishing 7.5,
and Racing 3.6 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.

I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my
favorite applications. I'm thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0,
but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0. Please help!

Dear Troubled User:
This is a very common problem that men complain bout.
Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0,
thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program.

Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by
its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!!
It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0.

It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed.
You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed to not allow this.

Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under Warnings-Alimony-Child Support.
I recommend that you keep Wife1.0 and work on improving the situation.

I suggest installing the background application "Yes Dear?"
to alleviate software augmentation.

The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE because
ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system
will return to normal anyway.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance.
Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as
Clean and Sweep 3.0, Cook It 1.5 and Do Bills 4.2.


However, be very careful how you use these programs.
Improper use will cause the system to launch the program Nag, Nag 9.5.

Once this happens, the only way to improve
the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software.

I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0!
WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances,
install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3.
This application is not supported by Wife 1.0
and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and I noticed a
distinct slowdown in the overall system performance, particularly in the
flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as
Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable
programs such as NEWS 5...0, MONEY 3.0 and FOOTBALL 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5..3 to fix these problems,
but to no avail.

If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically
run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5..

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to
default to Silence 2.5 and Ignore Pro 3.

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-In-Law 1.0
(it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all
your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program.
These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory
and cannot learn new applications quickly.

Happiness is a voyage

We convince ourselves that life will be better once we are married, have a baby,then another.

Then we get frustrated because our children are not old enuogh,
and that all will be well when they are older.
Then we get frustrated because they reach adolescence and we must deal with them. S
urely we'll be happier when they grow out of the teen years.
We tell ourselves our life will be better wen our spouse gets his/her act together,
when we have a nicer car, wenh we can take a vacation,when we finally retire.

The truth is that there is no better time to be happy than right now.
If not,then wen?
Your life will always be full of challenges. it is bettre to admit as
much and to decide to be happy is spite of it all.
For the longest time, it seemed that life was about to start. REAL LIFE.
Bu there was always some obstacle along the way, an ordeal to get through,
some work to be finish, some time to be given, a bill to be paid.
Then LIFE would start... Obstacles were life.
That there isn't any road to hapiness.
EPINESS is the road..
So, enjoy every moment.
Stop wainting for school to end, for a return to skull, to lose ten pounds,
to gain ten pounds,for your favourite song to be played on raido,
for work to begin,to get MARRIED, for Thursday evenign, for saturday mornign,
for summer, for fall, for winter,for spring... Before deciding to be happi.


Happiness is a voyage, not destination.
There is no better ie to be happy than...
NOW!!
Live and enjoy the moment...


A race

Some time ago, the Seattle Olympics, 9 athletes,
all mentally or physically challenged,
were standing on the start line for the 100m race.
The gun fired and the race began.
Not everyone was running,
but everyone wanted to participate and win.

Thet ran in threes, a boy tripped and fell,
did a few somersaults and start craying.
The other eight heard him crying.
They slowed down and looked behind them.
They stopped and came back.. All of them...

A girl with Down's Syndrome sat down next to him,
hugged him and asked, " Felling better now?"
Then, all nine walked shoulder to shoulder to the finsih line.

The whole crowd stood up and applauded.
Adn the applause lasted a very long time....

People whu witnessed this still talk about it.
WHY?

Because deep down inside us, we all know know that the most important
thing in life is much ore than winning for ourselves..

The most important thing in this life is to help others to win.
Even if that means slowing down and changing our own race.

The Golden Ratio

Masih ingat mengenai matematik? Anda pasti tahu mengenai prime numbers atau nombor perdana, bukan?

Tetapi, pernahkah anda mendengar tentang ‘Fibonacci numbers’?

Sebagaimana nombor perdana, Fibonacci numbers juga merupakan satu siri nombor, dan ia dibentuk daripada satu rumus yang sangat mudah. Dua nombor pertama Fibonacci numbers adalah 0 dan 1, dan setiap nombor seterusnya dibentuk daripada hasil tambah dua nombor sebelumnya. Maka, turutan nombor yang dapat dibentuk adalah:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584 …

Selain susunan yang unik ini, Fibonacci numbers juga mempunyai karekteristiknya yang tersendiri. Setiap nombor Fibonacci ini jika dibahagi dengan nombor yang sebelumnya akan menghasilkan angka yang lebih kurang sama nilainya.

Sebagai contoh:

Dan turutan ini akan terus menjadi ‘fix’ selepas angka yang ke-13 dalam siri ini, iaitu selepas nombor 144. Bermakna, jika nombor seterusnya dibahagi menggunakan kaedah di atas, ia akan memberikan hasil yang sama, iaitu 1.618.

Angka 1.618 inilah yang selanjutnya dikenali sebagai The Golden Ratio.

Menariknya, banyak makhluk ALLAH di muka bumi ini adalah dicipta dengan menggunakan skala The Golden Ratio tersebut, bahkan pada penciptaan manusia itu sendiri. Cuba lihat rajah di bawah:

Menakjubkan, bukan? Tetapi itulah kuasa Allah, Dia menciptakan setiap sesuatu itu dengan perkiraan yang amat terperinci sekali. Maha Suci Allah!

Firman Allah SWT: “Yang memiliki kerajaan langit dan bumi, tidak mempunyai anak, tidak ada sekutu baginya dalam kekuasaan-Nya, dan Dia menciptakan segala sesuatu, lalu menetapkan ukuran-ukurannya dengan tepat.” (al-Furqan : 2)

Namun, The Golden Ratio ini tidaklah tepat pada setiap satu badan manusia, sebaliknya hanya jitu pada tubuh manusia yang paling ideal sahaja. Maka, kalau jari anda itu termasuk dalam kategori Marfan Syndrome, tak usahlah digagahi untuk diukur dan dibanding-banding dengan nisbah emas ini. =)

Conversation..


An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The
Almighty.


He asks one of his new students to stand and...
Prof: So you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.
Prof: Is God good?
Student: Sure.
Prof: Is God all-powerful?
Student: Yes.
Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would
attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn’t. How is this God good then? Hmm?
Student
: Silent.
Prof: You can’t answer, can you? Let’s start again, young fellow. Is God good?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Is Satan good?
Student: No.
Prof: Where does Satan come from?
Student: Silent.
Prof: Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it?
Student: Yes.
Prof
: So who created evil?
Student: Silent.
Prof: Is there sickness, Immorality, Hatred, Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?
Student: Yes, sir.
Prof: So, who created them?
Student: Silent.
Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell
me, son...Have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.
Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student: Yes.
Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn’t
exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.
Prof
: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Prof: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof: Yes.
Student: No sir. There isn’t. (The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it. (There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)
Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?
Student: You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light,
normal light, bright light, flashing light... But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing
and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were you would be able to make
darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?
Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is
death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism,but has never seen, much less fully understood, either one. To view death as the opposite oflife is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.

Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir? (The Professor shakes his
head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)
Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain? (The class breaks
out into laughter!)

Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt
it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable,
demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do
we then trust your lectures, sir? (The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.
Student: That is it sir... The link between man and God is FAITH. That is all that keeps things
moving and alive.
